The NYC Grassroots Media Coalition (NYCGMC) will present its third annual conference at New School University Saturday, February 11th from 10am to 6pm. The conference theme, forging stronger connections between independent media and communities organizing around issues of justice and equality, seeks to address pressing issues of representation and diversity within the NYC community and beyond. Registration for the event costs $20 for adults, $5 for youth and $30 at the door.

A projected one thousand students, activists, media makers, community workers and artists will convene in Manhattan for a day of more than 40 workshops, do-it-yourself (DIY) trainings, discussions, panels, art exhibitions and films. Kaajal Shah, of The Ave Magazine noted: “In these times, conferences like this are vital in helping to facilitate the process of engaging young people in ongoing organizing work. The struggle to find accurate, truthful media remains a struggle in our communities. It is our responsibility to not only hold these information sources accountable but to also have the ability to create our own tools of conveying our stories through our voices.” A goal of the conference is to address pressing media policy issues threatening to limit grassroots communication. Karen Helmerson, Director of Electronic Media and Film at New York State Council on the Arts said “The NYC Grassroots media conference offers a fresh look at policy in our digital society and broadens the scope of representation from the ground up – so critical to a healthy democracy.”

Workshops will include “STORMWATCH: The Struggle for a Renewed Activist Media after Hurricane Katrina” with Praxis Project, The People’s Hurricane Relief Fund & Oversight Coalition, Emergency Communities “Do It Yourself Media Criticism” with Fairness and Accuracy in News Reporting, “Media Policy: Why it Affects Everyone” with Free Press and NYC Wireless, “Using Youth Media to Fight Stereotypes” with Arab Women Active in the Arts and Media (AWAAM)

Community art exhibitions and film screenings presented by Hip Hop Association, the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, Urban Visionaries, The Media That Matters Film Festival and Third World Newsreel. Katy Chevigny, Independent Filmmaker and Executive Director of Arts Engine, Inc. states: “New York City is filled with millions of voices, each with it’s own story to tell. The Grassroots Media Conference is one of the best events for media makers to share those stories and the strategies they employ for getting them out there!”

The NYC Grassroots Media Coalition is a project of Paper Tiger Television in collaboration with May First/People Link, North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) and the NYC Independent Media Center.

*Agenda:*

  1. Steve Morton/Boundless Security Systems: Can City-Scale WiFi Reduce Crime?

What are the obstacles and opportunities for city-scale wireless video surveillance, especially in crime-plagued neighborhoods? A fascinating discussion about Boundlesss.com’s new wifi surveillance system that greatly enhances image clarity, network capacity and mobility. This could be a tremendously effective tool for law enforcement that could help reduce crime. How can privacy concerns be balanced? Steve will also cover system design, and possible deployment schemes — followed by an extended Q&A session.

Steven G. Morton is CEO and CTO of “Boundless Security Systems, Inc.”:http://www.boundlesss.com in Newtown, CT.

He is the architect of an ultra low bandwidth, digital video surveillance system. It has been shown to multiply the number of wireless video surveillance channels 100-fold, and to enable video surveillance to easily be moved to wherever the most crime is this week. As a result, increasingly popular, city-scale WiFi networks can be used for video surveillance without being overloaded by video.

  2. Year-end roundup and NYCwireless-2006 resolutions
  3. Workshop breakout sessions: small group discussions from novice to advanced questions

_”NYCwireless”:http://www.nycwireless.net is a non-profit organization that advocates for, and enables the growth of free, public wireless networks._

Updated: NYC SIG-CHI Panel Presentation on Dec. 7th

_note: this entry was republished today as a reminder_

I will be appearing on December 7th from 6:30pm-8:30pm on a panel at the next “NYC SIG-CHI”:1 meeting discussing wireless networks and building software for wireless broadband use. I’ll be concentrating my talk on NYCwireless and the software that I and others have built to make use of our Wi-Fi networks, and I’ll also talk a bit about social software and how wireless technologies play a role in bringing social software into more natural social situations.

The panel should be fun. Scott Weiss of Usable Products will speak on quantitative research for mobile devices. Josh Rubin, formerly with UPOC and now on his own, and John Devanney of MOMENT will also be speaking. I expect there will be much open discussion about the different aspects of mobile design.

*UPDATE: The panel has been postponed until January 18. Please update your calendars!*

MIT Media Lab's 20th Anniversary

I’m currently at the “MIT Media Lab’s”:1 20th anniversary event, where the “Walter Bender”:2 has invited all of us alumni back to the Lab to see what work is going on. One of the most interesting thing being talked about is the “$100 laptop project”:3, which integrates low cost Wi-Fi mesh networking. One of the best quotes about the project came from “Mike Bove”:4 (this was relayed via a third party, so the exact wording is certainly not correct):

> “When you have tens or hundreds of kids communicating with each other without the need for centralized access points, then the existing telecommunications system will really undergo a revolutionary change.”

He’s right. More mesh = less centralized (structure, control, dependency, cost). This is a great meme that needs to be promoted publicly. This is truly the power of *community* networking.

WSFII Presentation On October 1, 2005

I’ve posted the presentation I gave at the “World Summit on Free Information Infrastructures”:1 (WSFII). I “wrote about this conference previously”:2, and it was wonderful to participate! I learned quite a lot about what’s going on overseas — Europe and India — and made some good friends too.

You can download it here: “WSFII Presentation – NYCwireless Oct. 1, 2005″:3

You can also see photos from the event here: “Flickr photos from WSFII”:4

World Summit on Free Information Infrastructures

I will be at the “WSFII conference”:1 in London from September 30-October 3, “appearing on a panel on the 31st about Free Wireless Networks”:2.

bq. “WSFII”:1 will bring together individuals and groups from across the world working on projects such as free wireless networking, free of copyright mapping and open hardware. It is also part of a larger season of events based around alternative approaches to knowledge production and access and timed to coincide with the UK’s hosting of a pan-European Creative Economy conference.

The event is free, and anyone who is interested in free wireless networks, free media, and free culture should attend. We’ll be working with people from all five continents, learning about what’s going on in other countries and communities, and figuring out how we can work together for common goals.
